ENTRY 04 - Do Not COLLECT If You Cannot PROTECT
Just on March 14, 2022 meeting, my professor's presentation displayed the slogan, "Do not COLLECT if you cannot PROTECT," which piqued my interest because it has something to do with data security. So, the idea behind such a phrase is that when an organization or a person collects personal information from its subject, the organization or person collecting the data is required to protect and safeguard that information because if they do not, their subject's information would be compromised, likely to result in issues, problems, identity theft, and other concerns. They will suffer legal ramifications, most notably RA 10173, and maybe arrested for being reckless in safeguarding the subject's information and data. As per my understanding, the simple explanation of this term's lesson is that when acquiring data from the target topic, be always cautious and sensitive to how and where you store it to prevent being locked up.
The presentation exhibited images of major social media platform portals such as Facebook, Twitter, and Google, e-commerce platform portals such as Shopee and Lazada, our USeP portal, and even hospital portals midway through our talk. This is to emphasize and demonstrate that to utilize these portals, we must first furnish them with our information in order to establish an account or a user for the aforementioned platform. The most concerning aspect of these portals that horde our information is that when they are hacked or infiltrated, our information is likely to be taken, and they would then be free to do whatever they want with our information, including such fraud, public display of confidential information, and many other things.
Just after the conclusion of the meeting, I recognized that this topic had a profound relationship to my first blog, in which we were asked by our professor if we were "Are you for sale?" The commonalities are that we are supplying our information to these portals through using portals. It gives me the sensation that I am exposed and vulnerable. So, always exercise caution before sharing such sensitive personal information, because failure to do so might result in terrible consequences.
